Life is full of polar opposites. For every man in a corner office endlessly gazing over spreadsheets there is a man who prides himself in the amount of light bulbs he can eat in one sitting. As much as the one looks down on the other, there is an unspoken acknowledgment that the one begat the other. And so we have come to a crossroads where two monsters of the luxury market meet. The Audi A8L is a car for the highfalutin, practical, and overall respectable drivers of the world. The Cadillac CTS-V is more of a car for those who exude adrenaline, take life as it comes, and for those who may have a slight tendency to keep their right foot planted to the floor. Both of the vehicles will require a check north of $70k and both offer the prestige and notoriety that you expect from brands like Cadillac and Audi. We have decided to dive deeper into both of these adversarial vehicles and present the information so that you may answer the metaphorical question for yourself… will it be the blue pill or the red pill? Road Test: 2011 Tesla Roadster Sport "It's Electric"
In the current automotive market there are a very limited number of brands competing for customers and you don’t often hear of all new brands entering in trying to compete with the major established brands. I can actually count on my hand the number of companies that have started up producing cars in the last decade and there are far less that anyone would consider having been an actual success. Yet back in 2003 Elon Musk and a group of others decided they could make an all electric sports car to compete with the likes of Porsche and Lotus to prove their electric technology was feasible in a production car. They believed this technology would eventually be used in sedans and compacts to replace gasoline and move their company into the mainstream market. As we take the keys to this Tesla Roadster Sport the company has announced the last batch of cars will roll off the assembly line in the coming year to end production. Having produced and sold around 1,600 Roadsters worldwide, the company believes it is ready to move forward to its expansion into more affordable mainstream vehicles. We push the button on the center console to start up the motor and quietly head out to the streets of Santa Monica to see if this is the future of the American automotive scene or just another start up that will only live on in our memories.
Road Test: 2011 GMC Acadia Denali "Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow"
General Motors has been criticized at many points in its history for trying to sustain too many brands and using slight differentiations in the exterior and interior to try to pass a similar car off as an entirely different model in another brand’s portfolio. As the boys at GM have axed several brands and tried to break away from the corporate thinking that has gotten them into trouble in the past, the LAMBDA platform that underpins this GMC Acadia Denali may be one of the last remaining traces of the old platform sharing ideals from the 80′s and 90′s. Recent news from the General Motors camp has the Acadia slated to die an honorable death after 2012 as the company realizes the lack of a need for a vehicle identical to the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave. We borrowed the new Denali version of the Acadia to see if this is a mournful goodbye or an execution of the last of the bad blood that remains in the GM gene pool.

A Month of SUV Love
This month at TheIgnitionBlog.com we will be examining several different SUV’s. As the industry turns towards smaller more fuel efficient cars, we will look into the modern SUV and whether the American consumer’s love affair with giant family haulers still exists or if the romance is fading away due to rising fuel costs and growing concerns about the environment. What solutions does the modern buyer with a large family have when looking to bring everyone along for the ride.
Road Test: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V "The Thunder Rolls"
As one of the worst rainstorms in recent history dumps over Southern California causing floods and landslides, I am handed the keys to a car that contains a presence that rivals the forces of mother nature. To say that the CTS-V is a fast car would be like describing getting struck by lighting as “tingly.” In terms of the numbers the Cadillac boasts a 6.2l V8 LSA motor that is a variation of the LS9 in the ZR-1 Corvette that churns out a measly 556 hp and 551 torque. That will project this heavy sedan from 0 – 60mph in around 3.9 seconds and onto a quarter mile somewhere near 12 seconds at around 118mph. The sheer power of this car cannot be explained simply by numbers. The best way to describe it may be to compare to a scene from the classic Disney film, “Angels in The Outfield.” A pitcher is helped by an angel who grabs the ball and flies into the catchers mitt unseen. When you are driving along at about 25mph and step on the right pedal… You’d be hard pressed to tell me a host of angels aren’t pushing from behind.

My main complaints in the CTS Coupe regarding the handling and overall “sportiness” of the Cadillac have been eliminated due to an upgraded suspension system using Delphi MagneRide technology… something about magnets and reacting quickly to changes in road conditions. The stuff works well. The CTS barge is stopped by Brembo brakes that are about the size of wheels on most cars. On the sharp corners up Glendora Mountain Road the Cadillac was simply fantastic. It brings you to a chuckle every time you throw the massive vehicle into a corner at a seemingly stupid speed and feel nothing but grip from the tires. The supercharger on this car does take a little while to spool up and you wont see its impact till around 40mph, but the engine alone is more than enough to do the job in most conditions.
The vehicle we tested was equipped with the Tremec 6-speed manual transmission which was very fluid and had a very nice, short throw to it. The initial takeoff turns into a burnout or stall situation for those more acquainted with a Ford Focus, but can be mastered quickly. The only real benefit I would have seen to the automatic was sharp turns in which 2nd gear seemed too high and 1st gear seemed like a death wish. The traction control in the car is simply stunning and was tested to its limits on wet asphalt that I would describe as driving on glass. The system was not intrusive when turned “OFF” and came in just in time to save your neck. And in TC “ON” mode you could sprint quickly onto a freeway and not fear that the back end would get twitchy.
The interior of the vehicle would be familiar to anyone who has been inside a regular CTS. The dash is filled with soft materials and the design is accentuated with glowing lights in the evening. The only huge noticable differences are the ”microfiber suede” steering wheel with “V” logo, 14-way adjustable suede lined Recaro bucket seats, and the manual transmisssion. Cadillac also added a “G-meter” under the info on the display screen, for those who care. The Cadillac Navigation and Audio display systems are easy enough to use but lack certain features and easy of use that I found several weeks prior in an Audi A3. The seats were comfortable enough considering the track racer agenda of the car.
On the outside the Cadillac is in my opinion one of the most menacingly beautiful looking cars in my lifetime. The new “Evolution Green Metallic” paint for 2011 is now one of my favorite manufacture colors, you simply have to see it in person to understand how good it makes this car look. The car sits on 19″ wheels that were painted a gunmetal color. The headlights and tailights are fantastic looking in the evening.
Overall the CTS-V is simply stunning in nearly every way. Its one of the few cars I’ve had in awhile that seemed like a real “value” for the money you pay… if thats possible at $69k. When you look at the pricing on vehicles like the BMW M5, Mercedes E63, and the Audi S6 its simply a better car for the price. Its insane to think that in a time of automotive bailouts and green hybrid vehicles, GM releases a 556hp sedan that can outrun Porsches and Ferraris. The Cadillac CTS-V is one of the few that has weathered the storm of the modern marketplace and truly stands on its own as a pinacle of great engineering.
Road Test : 2011 Volvo S60 "Getting Naughty"
Ah, the test drive event, a way for auto manufacturers to offer a safe place for the consumer to drive their product as if they were a drunk toddler in a demolition derby. The only other closest joy to this driving experience would be to hop behind the wheel of a rented Kia Rondo and have at it. No other place can you see a man in his 50′s powerslide into a group of cones, take out a obstacle deer, and then fully lock the breaks as to avoid the slower Audi S4 in front piloted by an oriental women who seems to be adjusting the heated seats. These are the small things in life I enjoy.. but onto the car.
There were three stages to this particular event in Santa Anita, CA. The first was a competitive comparison in which you could choose to destroy an Audi S4 with the 2.0t engine, a BMW 328xi, or the all new Volvo S60 through an obstacle course set out by cones. We chose to drive the other cars first as the line was not queued outside the tent. The Audi was the base model, and it showed as the S4 gently made its way through the slalom, sharp 90 degree turn, and darted past the fake deer. The BMW was much of the same story, being the heaviest AWD model with the base engine. The fully loaded Volvo S60 was powerful off the line and very point-and-shoot through the slalom and the other sharp corners. Though upon initial entry of the car I had a sudden urge to find the Swede who designed the button layout and box his head in.
Second section of the event was the demonstration of the new crash avoidance and pedestrian safety technology. After seeing the infamous videos of Volvo’s braking system failing on several occasions (see below), I politely hopped in the back seat to watch. The representative explained that the system worked at speeds below 15mph and could not stop all accidents, but could help save many people a small fender bender in freeway traffic, or a skateboarder’s limbs. We drove forward at the “safe test speed” of 9mph and the car stopped as described right in front of the obstacle. Impressive, but continual improvements are important, Volvo is again helping their reputation of the safest car manufacturer.

The final part of the event was the one we had all been waiting for; the autocross time challenge. An autocross course was set up and each driver would have their short lap timed to compete for the fastest of the day who would in turn receive an Ipad for their efforts. Filled with confidence I would have an Ipad waiting for me at the end I set off to beat the 50 second standing record for the day, looking to avoid orange cones which were +2 seconds upon each collision. I set off and in the first hairpin turn, gave too much with the go-pedal to get the S60 to break loose and slide sideways a breath away from a group of cones. I corrected, finished the rest of the course smooth as silk, and set through the checkered flags with a gentleman’s time of 53.5 seconds. I am a man of no excuses so I will leave out the fact that I had bald tires, non-existent break pads, and a car with a temp closer to the large “H” than the “C”. The overall feel of the S60 was great in terms of speed and handling but it did have it’s flaws, maybe it was the abuse of the day, but the car seemed cheaper in quality and in road feel than the likes of a Mercedes or BMW. It has a very similar feel to a Audi A4 from the B6 generation (2000-05). Great car, just misses the mark in several areas. The car looks fantastic on the outside and the inside is mostly fantastic if you avoid eye contact with the button layout on the center console. Overall I was impressed with the improvements and hope to see more cars like this coming from our friends in Sweden.
